How to Talk About Your Cancer Diagnosis?

Telling people you have cancer can feel overwhelming. You might not feel ready to talk, while family or friends may want to know more. That’s okay. It’s your story, you can decide when and how to share it. Be honest about your feelings, whether you want to talk a little or a little right now.

If you do decide to share, choose the way that feels best for you. You can talk face to face, or use the phone, a message, or an email. Start the conversation gently and try to share only what’s most important to you. It can help to pause often and check if the other person understands or has questions.
Let your feelings show. You don’t have to put on a brave face all the time. If you’re scared or unsure, saying it out loud can help others better support you. If you’re not ready to talk, just being with someone, even in silence, can bring comfort. And remember, you can always ask someone close to help share the news with others.
Not everyone will react the way you expect. Some people may be sad or unsure of what to say. Try to understand their feelings, but don’t feel pressured. You can always ask them to listen or change the subject when you need a break. Talking about cancer is hard, but you don’t have to do it all at once.
