Doctor-Patient Relationship – a Partnership

The doctor-patient relationship should be a partnership, but frustration can set in when it’s not functioning well. If you’re having difficulty communicating with your doctor, there are often steps you can take to improve things.
Start by being as honest and open as possible about your concerns with your doctor.

Here are a few ways to initiate the conversation:

  • I’m concerned that we’re not communicating effectively, and here’s why…
  • I need to talk to you about …, but I’m struggling to do so. Can we have a conversation about it?
  • I’m having trouble understanding … could you help me?

If you and your doctor can’t resolve the issue during regular appointments, consider scheduling a separate visit specifically to address the matter. Your primary care physician might be willing to discuss the issue with your oncologist, which can sometimes feel less intimidating and may help improve the situation.
In some cases, like any other relationship, the fit with your doctor may not be ideal. Don’t feel obligated to stay with a doctor out of loyalty or because you were referred to them. Effective communication, characterized by mutual respect and openness, is a key aspect of a healthy doctor-patient relationship. You can seek a new doctor if you don’t feel this level of trust. Ultimately, you should prioritize what feels right for you.
